500th EWP (January, 2013)

Redmond Gary Australia has manufactured its 500th EWP. The machine was supplied to Ergon Energy.

Redmond Gary Australia manufactured its first EWP Model TF13M in 1994. Before manufacturing EWPs the company had extensive manufacturing experience in the mining industry, in particular heavy drives and winches up to 750kN. Redmond Gary was also a major manufacturer of truck components for Mack Trucks Australia, Volvo Trucks Australia, Western Star and Ford.

The company first got involved in manufacturing equipment for Electricity Authorities through SEQEB (now Energex). Redmond Gary started making special equipment for SEQEB Engineering Department. This machinery included an automated machine for drilling cross arms and prototype self loading cable drum trailers. After SEQEB brought the self loading cable drum trailers to the market, Redmond Gary Australia purchased the manufacturing rights from SEQEB for self loading cable drum trailers and started to promote a range of trailer mounted products for cable handling to authorities throughout Australia.

Redmond Gary Australia was approached by the then head engineer of Sydney Electricity who wanted us to manufacture elevating work platforms. After a couple of years of deliberation it was decided that we would carry out market research to find the most appropriate EWP configuration to work on power lines with cross arm setups for Australian conditions. At the time, other manufacturers were producing knuckle boom machines.

This radical design for its time was very hard to sell to authorities because they hadn’t considered this type of machine and weren’t used to different setups required to utilise the boom configuration. Sales were very slow to begin with but eventually electricity authorities and contractors started to realise the benefits of a machine with zero tail-swing and very good side reach. Redmond Gary is a wholly owned Australian company and carries out all design and manufacture in Australia. Although the boom configuration is similar to the first machines built, the complete machine has been constantly upgraded to improve safety and performance.

We at Redmond Gary are very proud of this product but are not prepared to rest on our laurels. Continuous research and development is undertaken to constantly improve this product range.
